The Passion of "Rose"

~Sunday, September 30, 2012

A huge thanks goes out to my friend, Rose, this morning!

Upon a late return home last night from a fun-filled evening of “Chicken Cacciatore,” and numerous rounds of playing cards at my parents’ house, (I can still see my dad grinning from ear to ear, as he once again won the last big “pot”—four dollars!—we throw into the middle of the table for the final round), my husband and I opened the door to walk into our kitchen and my husband proclaimed, “I can smell that passion fruit!”  I had a bowl of this wondrous fruit given to me by my friend, Rose, this week.  She also treats my family to her home-made passion fruit jam every year (amongst many other “fruits” of her labor:  perfect avocados, sweet peaches, and a plentitude of tomatoes in every color and variety!)

Thus, with the scent of passion fruit still on my mind as I awoke this morning, I sprang out of bed, grabbed my camera, and started helping my husband prepare this delicious smoothie:

Ingredients (Serves 5)

3 cups seedless watermelon, chilled
2 organic bananas, peeled and halved
7 passion fruit (halve and squeeze the juice into a bowl, as if you were squeezing seeds out of a tomato)

Place watermelon into the Vitamix, set machine on low (Variable 3), and blend for 20 seconds.  This should yield approximately 3 cups of juice in the container at this stage.

Place the rest of the ingredients in the Vitamix and blend on low, slowly increasing to a higher setting (Variable 10), then to HIGH.  Blend on HIGH for approximately 1 minute.  Serve immediately.
